FIJI 2

Day 66- 10/10/09
NADI - MANGO BAY

We got up early this morning to enjoy the buffet breakfast, the last day in our luxury hotel! Then it was on the road again. We took the local bus from Nadi Central, it was jammers with people, and there were hundreds of buses! Eventually we found our bus that took us along the Coral Coast. Everyone on the bus was so friendly and eager to know where we were from and where we were going to stay, giving us tips for other places to see. 2 hours later we arrived at Mango Bay Resort. The bus driver said that it was a short walk to the resort, so off we went with our now 25kg bags….luckily two staff members were walking back and rang for the shuttle to pick us up…Thank
You!! It was too hot to carry that weight down the road, which turned out to be a good 5min drive!! So arriving in Mango Bay, we were told that we had been upgraded to a Safari Tent with en-suite! It was pretty cool, a massive tent with a double bed and two singles, plenty of space! Our door was a zip
Our Tent for the week!!!
(that will make a great addition to our door collection) and so was the door to the toilet, except
the toilet was totally out doors, well we had walls thank god, but no roof!! The resort was amazing, filled with back packers and young couples on a budget like us!! That evening we went to a Kava Ceremony. This is a traditional ceremony to welcome new guests. They mix a dried root plant with water and fill half a coconut with the drink. They root Kava is meant to have relaxing and anesthetising effects. That it does!!! So all us newbie’s head to the tent to join in the Kava Ceremony, of course Rob is chosen as chief and I am his spokesperson. (He loved this, as he didn’t have to say a word!!) Then the drink is passed out, but before receiving it you have to cup-clap you hands (nice and loud) and shout ‘BULA’ (which means Hello or Cheers/Slainte) then knock back the Kava and return the cup and cup-clap 3 times. As chief and his spokesperson we had 2 cups, by the way it tastes like muddy water (something you’d make up when you were a kid playing at the back of your garden, like chocolate ‘mud’ cake and tea…tea being muddy water, well that’s what it was like!) and not to long after drinking this your tongue would be numb, no other effects as it is totally natural and not alcoholic. So we all headed back to the bar for Happy Hour!! Amazing sunset, This is Fiji!!!

Day 67- 11/10/09
MANGO BAY (RAINING)

We began to wonder why we came to Fiji, because the rain was awful. Constant rain all day and night!! Deep down inside we thought it has to pick up, it’s Fiji!! Plus our first 2 days were very hot. So we dipped into the bottom of our bags to take out our rain gear, which we didn’t think we would use again!! We decided to give scuba diving another go, because the last time we did a dive was 5 years ago in the Caribbean. Plus we had our Padi pass with us. In the rain we had a refresh course in the pool, which was handy because I don’t think we could remember anything! It came straight back to us once we were under water. Enough of swimming around the pool, seeing how dirty it was. It was time to hit the ocean, or not!! The weather was too bad to go out so we had to hold off till tomorrow. When off to bed the noise of the rain hitting the tent kept us awake for a while!!

Day 68- 12/10/09
MANGO BAY (RAINING AGAIN)

Waking up, raining again!!! Plus weather too bad to go scuba diving again! There is not much you can do here if the rain is coming down in buckets. So it wasn’t a very eventful day, plus I don’t want to bore you, trying to write something interesting when we did absolutely nothing!!! Our open top Toilet!!

Day 69- 13/10/09
MANGO BAY (RAINING AGAIN)
Read books and stayed indoors, no news today, weather still crappy… and raining constantly! Only funny thing, I guess some would call it funny others rude!! I find it rude and Rob thinks it’s hilarious!! See what you think… Ok there is a guy working in Mango Bay called Max, he seems really friendly, the first day we met him rob was trying to open a coconut. So Max took us to an area in the forest just near our tent to show him how to break the coconut and peel off the outer layer…(I’m sure there’s a real name for it) So that was fine, no weirdness there!! Then the next day max saw us reading on our porch and he shouted over ‘Hi Rob!’ … pause… no, no ‘Hi Danielle!’ I let thins one go, maybe he forgot my name! No worries! Then it happened again, Max bumped into us on the way to the restaurant, ‘Hi Rob!’, I said hi this time but no reply, not even a nod in my general direction!! He carried on having a chat with Rob while I walked behind. At this point Rob is loving it and going with the flow of it because he loves laughing at me getting annoyed especially at this sort of thing!! All I want is a nod of recognition or a ‘Bula’/’Hi’. Any way that’s my little story of today!! There is more to come… If only the sun was shining!!

Day 70- 14/10/09
MANGO BAY
We woke up once again to the beautiful sound of rain, we probably would have stayed in bed for the day but we had to get up for the free breakfast!! The weather started to clear a bit, so we ended up heading out for our dive. The weather may have been getting better but under water the current was still very strong! It was so funny, I spent most of my time trying to keep up with the group, I was knackered. The guys got to see a baby white tip shark, but I got there and it had just swam away. Finally we made our way back, so we were so we were swimming with the current. This is where I turned into a floating leaf or piece of seaweed! I couldn’t control where I was going, I ended up in front of our guide and he was signalling if I was ok. I ended up making some made up signal which was meant to mean strong current… well I don’t know if he got it but we all just floated back towards the boat! I had no energy to do anything other then just let the water take there!!
That afternoon was nice and dry, about time! So we finally got to chill out and watch a perfect sunset!

Day 71- 15/10/09
MANGO BAY – PACIFIC HARBOUR

Today we left Mango Bay and headed to Pacific Harbour, only an hour away by bus. So we were there in no time, but before we left let me just finish on my story about Max!! This morning as we packed, Max had walked by but didn’t say ‘Hi!’ (Maybe his phase with Rob is over!!) But then as we are ready to leave he shouts over ‘Hi Rob!’….. This time I shout back a nice and loud ‘Hi Max!!’…. still nothing. (Rob is laughing out loud at this point and I have smoke coming out of my ears!!) Then he comes over and takes Rob’s bag, so Rob takes mine!! Does Max fancy Rob or what ... I am invisible!!! Hello… a simple ‘Hi’ is all I ask! Danielle taking it all in!!!

Today was supposed to be really nice and sunny, and it was at Mango Bay, but by the time we got to Pacific Harbour it was raining again. But at least we had a massive villa to chill out in. We booked a room in a B&B, Nanette’s Home stay. It was the same price as our tent in Mango Bay so it was a good deal. It was even better when we realise that we will be the only guests there. So basically we have a 4 bedroom villa with a private pool and garden, sky TV and full kitchen all to ourselves all for €35 a night!! Sweet!!
So we headed off to the village for the afternoon…as we are walking there it suddenly starts lashing rain, by the time we reached the village we were drenched! The Arts village was so cute, so we checked out as few places and booked a few of the typical touristy things – you know like the local fire walking show and of course Shark Diving!!! Yeah! Scuba diving with sharks while they are being fed right in front of you and you are not in a cage! Looking forward to it! Then we headed back to the villa for dinner and a movie!!
